Senator Mobina Jaffer, the first Muslim, African-born, and first senator of South Asian descent in Canada, describes her Ugandan expulsion experience to the从东到西项目英国based oral history endeavour. Accompanying her on a panel discussion are two British ex-Ugandan professors, Professor M. Iqbal Asaria, and Dr. Amir Gulamhusein. This moderated discussion conducted by leading contemporary commentator on the African Indian diaspora Dr. Mohamed Keshavjee and opened by Fiyaz Mughal OBE, founder of the From East to West project and founder of Faith Matters UK, highlights the key factors that allowed Ugandan Asians to successfully resettle in the new countries to which they moved.
According to Max Russel, Social researcher for the project, these are the type of voices that have previously not been captured and reflect the enormous sacrifices which an earlier generation made. The program forms part of the repertoire of materials that will be used in the UK education system to inform the younger generation of the trauma of forced migration and the need for succeeding generations to find a sense of belonging in the countries to which their
parents moved. According to Fiyaz Mughal, trauma is something that has not been widely
spoken of before and by relating their experiences individuals are able to come to terms with
